A friend and I traded some emails about the Celtics’ performances of late (I’m getting a little pessimistic, frankly) and he cut to what he thinks is the heart of the Celts and NBA’s problems: the emphasis on 3-point shots. From my friend:
“I find the Celtics unwatchable. (My wife) still enjoys at least when they win. I think I shared before my view WRT sports analytics:
“- Moneyball approaches went too far in baseball and wrecked things – the rich got richer (Sox, Yanks) and the games became unendurably long as hitters learned to wear out pitchers. Thank God for the Pitch Clock.
“- NFL analytics HUGELY improved the sport, made it even more fun (Redskins going for it on 4th down four times in the first quarter is not why they lost).
“I think the once fun/exciting 3-pointer is now the NBA equivalent of taking pitches in baseball. Way overdone… aside from the overreliance on three pointers, I think the Celts may be OK in the end but the understandable policy of resting less than healthy players for entire games (Horford, Porzingis, Holiday) must have some impact on building team rhythm. Just a hypothesis.”
Fyi: One of my nephews recently did his own analytics and suggested a 3-point shot limit of 25 per game, after which baskets from the 3-point range would only count as 2 points. I like the concept. …
