Fidelity orders workers back to office, donut shops thrilled

Well, that was an easy headline to write. Fifteen months ago, I wrote a post headlined: “Dell orders workers back to office, donut shops thrilled.” Now Fidelity has ordered its workers back to the office – and all I have to do is switch the company names. … Presto! No AI assistance needed! … Anyway, the Globe’s Larry Edelman admirably admits he stepped in it last week when he wrote, in the wake of the Fidelity’s BTO edict, that “Boston’s economy would get a much-needed boost if more employers required workers to return to the office full time.” He’s now getting an earful from readers – and his own Globe colleague Shirley Leung.

As a long-time remote worker, I might as well add my two cents: I’m truly sorry Al Capone’s closed, but I and other workers weren’t put on this earth to spend two-plus hours a day in traffic in order to fill downtown pizza parlors, Dunkin’ shops, power-lunch restaurants and corporate office towers, etc. Nor to help replenish the city of Boston’s depleted property-tax coffers. … Btw: I miss the Summer Street Al Capone’s, not necessarily the Haymarket Al Capone’s.
