The Mass & Cass mess: ‘The current plan has failed’

Dan Kennedy has the scoop on Globe editor Nancy Barnes’s memo on the assault of two Globe reporters at the corner of Mass and Cass in Boston, an attack first reported by the Boston Guardian and Scott Van Voorhis. … Not to be outdone, the Herald has a disturbing “Mass and Cass spillover” story of its own this morning, this one on a South End family who discovered a “homeless intruder squatted in their home while they were away last weekend — bathing, eating their food, and sleeping in the main bedroom.” … So here’s the question of the day: Would you want to live near the drug-infested Mass & Cass area? … And, no, I’m not going to use this as an opportunity to bash Mayor Wu. This is not a San Francisco-like example of a city overrun by derelicts and druggies. Wu has taken steps, if belatedly, to clean up the area. But she now has to admit, as much as she may loathe doing so, that Ed Flynn is right about Mass & Cass:  “The current plan has failed.”

Note – 7.26.25 – Since first publishing this post, I’ve learned Scott Van Voorhis also broke the Mass-Cass-Globe story, so I’ve added his name above. Sorry about that!
