The fine line: Historic Preservation, yes. NIMBYism, no

Banker & Tradesman reports how Cambridge’s landmark “as-a-right” multifamily housing ordinance is off to a shaky start, due partly to historic preservation rules that are apparently holding up some proposed projects. … Hub Blog addressed the same Cambridge subject last month. … I don’t know where you draw the line between historic preservation and mindless NIMBYism. I’m quite aware historic preservation regulations have been abused by NIMBY fanatics in the past. But there are legitimate historic preservation concerns out there. And, as I mentioned last month, the new Cambridge ordinance, as written, is almost inviting trouble. The ordinance needs some common-sense tweaking.

Fyi: My historic preservation bias was on full display last month on another zoning matter.
