There are progressives. Then there are pragmatic progressives. I think it’s safe to say Mayor Michelle Wu falls into the former category on most days – and that could be her problem. She doesn’t see or seek middle ground often enough. … Faced with a huge budget deficit? Forget spending cuts. Head straight to tax hikes. Faced with criticism of escalating White Stadium renovation costs? Double down on the city’s commitment. Faced with restaurateurs’ opposition to the city’s outdoor dining policy? Dig in. No compromise. … There’s resoluteness. And then there’s stubbornness. … Attention Globe headline writers: going from a 33 percent residential property tax hike to a 10 percent residential property tax hike during the course of a debate is a major swing, not a minor swing.
Update – A reader emails: “33 percent was the original estimate for the change from Q2-Q3 tax bill. 14 percent was the year-over-year estimate, which ended up being 10 percent. One of Wu’s mistakes was to use that quarterly change to make the situation look much worse than it was. … Unfortunately, some (at the Globe) didn’t appreciate the apples-to-oranges comparisons.”
