And Luis Tiant could also run the bases …

From a reader on the death of Luis Tiant and a ‘miraculous find’ of an old Phoenix article:

“(Luis was) the true star of the 1970s Red Sox. They really don’t make them like him anymore. They don’t make World Series games like 1975 anymore… a 155 pitch complete game is inconceivable today, as are pitchers hitting and running the bases late in big games. He was never not entertaining.

“The late George Kimball was a great Tiant chronicler – a miraculous find on the Internet from spring training 1979 after Tiant’s departure to the hated Yankees. There’s much else in this Phoenix to savor and digest … but for now RIP Luis.”

Fyi: I dimly recall watching with trepidation as Luis, who hadn’t hit or run bases in years due to the then new DH rule, stepped up to the plate in the ’75 WS. It turned out to be sheer fun to watch.
