MCAS: RIP?

It is and isn’t a surprise, i.e. a new Globe/Suffolk poll showing voters support eliminating the long-standing MCAS graduation requirement. It’s a surprise because the MCAS education reforms implemented years ago have largely worked and voters have largely stood by them. It isn’t a surprise because voter moods and views change. Voters’ attitudes finally changed on the graduated income tax issue in 2022 – and it looks like attitudes are about to change with the MCAS graduation requirement.

Keep in mind: Most other statewide MCAS standardized tests will remain in place – and I think that makes it easier for voters to eliminate just the graduation requirement. But you just know those tests are next on the Mass. Teachers Association’s target list.

Update – 10.9.24 -From David Mancuso at Contrarian Boston: “The Grand Bargain of 1993 education reform appears to be unraveling in Massachusetts. The system is precipitously backsliding away from the standards and accountability that once made Massachusetts the envy of other states.”
